Wayne Warren Bayles, Sr.

WAYNE WARREN BAYLES, SR. Wayne, also known to family and friends as "Mr. B" or "Mr. Wayne", passed away at age 96 in Jackson, TN on March 10, 2019 following a very short illness. Wayne was born on Sept. 4, 1922 near Gadsden, Tenn. to Samuel Bayles and Lida Belle Carter. He is survived by five of his children, Wayne Warren Jr. (Peg) of Cat Island, SC, Chelnesa Anne of Hidden Valley Lake, CA, Barbara Denise Bayles-Roberts of Jackson, Samuel Martin (Lindy) of Millington, TN, and James Marcus, known as Mark (Sherry), of Jackson, TN, his half-brother Major Edward Nelson of Sammamish, WA, and nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild when you count blended families. He is pre-deceased by his son Michael Tinsley Bayles, his brother Charles Wesley Bayles, and his ex-wife, Wilma Berryman, the mother of his children. Wayne left Jackson after graduating high school, joined the Tennessee National Guard, and became mobilized into the U.S. Army on active duty. He completed Officers Candidate School and became an officer. He was a highly decorated World War II veteran, including a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge. He served in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Major after more than 22 years, after working at the Pentagon, and worked for the government as a civilian for a few years before returning to Jackson/Humboldt to reside near family. Wayne remained active in his faith and with social groups and family. Health issues in the last years of his life could have slowed him down, but he refused to let them and lived independently with just a little family assistance until his passing. He was tremendously proud of all of his family who will sorely miss his love, wisdom, and ever-energetic spirit. He could fix anything and he told the best stories! He also will be missed by many friends, neighbors and church members. A viewing will be held from 10a.m. to 1p.m. on Saturday, March 16, at Poplar Heights Baptist Church at 1980 Hollywood Dr. in Jackson, TN 38305. A funeral service with military honors will follow immediately thereafter. A subsequent military interment will occur at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery near the nations capital. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Poplar Heights Baptist Church. Cards, stories, or fond memories of Wayne can be sent to his children thru his daughter, Chelnesa Bayles, at 16825 Hawks Hill Rd., Hidden Valley Lake, CA 95467, for inclusion into a memory book to be shared with all.
