Mrs. Evans died Saturday, November 10, in the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late E.W. Evans. She was born in Sedalia, Missouri, on May 7, 1924, daughter of the late Rev. D.E. Young and Lucille (Brock) Young. Before coming to Jackson with her husband in 1967, she worked in retail as the assistant manager of a womans dress shop before becoming the window designer for the local J.C. Penney Department Store. Later, she served as the Public Relations Director for the Winfield State Training School. She was active in several organizations and church, often serving as a Sunday School teacher and Bible School Superintendent. She developed her interest in Oriental painting by studying under Mrs. Chang. After coming to Jackson, she belonged to a number of organizations while continuing her interest in art and handwork. She especially treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren as they were growing up. She will be fondly remembered by her friends for her giving spirit and love of gospel music. She is survived by daughter, Carol Lazarus and husband Gary of Georgetown, Texas; daughter, Sherrie Haynes and husband Terry of Humboldt, Tennessee; grandchildren, Matt Tyler (Kasie), Tim Tyler (Kris), Phillip Tyler (Summer); and great-grandchildren, Noah, Jack, Mabry, Miles, and Mason; two nieces, Barbara Hood of Tulsa Oklahoma and Damaris Knobler of Dallas, Texas. Pallbearers are Matt Tyler, Tim Tyler, Phillip Tyler, and Terry Haynes; honorary pallbearer is Gary Lazarus. Burial will be in the Ridgecrest Cemetery. Contributions may be made in her memory to Englewood Baptist Church. To send a flower arrangement or to plant trees in memory of Helen Joyce Evans, please click here to visit our Sympathy Store.
