Graveside services will be held for Billy Griffin Hampton, age 84, on Sunday, January 24, 2021. Visitation will begin at 2 PM with the service at 2:30 at Highland Memorial Gardens with Brother Steven Callicoatt officiating. Mr. Hampton passed away at JMCGH on January 21, 2021 due to complications caused by Covid-19. He was born in Jackson, TN to the late William and Ernestine Hampton. He was a member of East Trinity United Methodist Church. He held many jobs as a young man that included delivering groceries on bicycle around the East Chester community, driving a school bus for Madison County, working with his grandfather in the cattle business and his father in the lumber business, as well as, bobtailing loads all around the region. In July of 1960, he began a 34 year career with the gas and water department of Jackson Utility Division retiring in 1994. He married the late Carolyn Bowman Hampton in 1957. She died in 2015. While she was hospitalized and living in a nursing home, he stayed by her side each night. He slept in a chair right beside her bed. He was faithful to the very end of her life. Billy then moved into Brookdale Jackson Oaks where everyone affectionately called him "Uncle Billy". He loved all the friends he made there and all the fun times he had while living there. He became especially good at bowling on the Wii. He also enjoyed opening the door for visitors and talking to whomever he could. The family extends our thanks for making his last 5 years there so joyful. In addition to being preceded in death by his parents and his wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Bud Wells. Survivors include his sisters-in-laws, Gayle Wells and Jean Rainey; brother-in-law, Charlie Rainey; nieces, Sheila Freemont (Jeff), Carol Ann Alphin (Lee), Beth Attaway (Brent); nephew, Greg Rainey; and 3 great-nieces and 4 great-nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to East Trinity United Methodist Church at 3291 Paul Coffman Drive, Jackson, TN 38301.
