Ann Ballard Mayo

Ann Ballard Mayo died peacefully at her home in Jackson on Wednesday, November 25th, 2020, after a prolonged illness. She was born on March 27th, 1941, in Alcorn County, Mississippi, where she was educated in the public schools. She was a loving wife, mother of four children, and grandmother to ten. Mrs. Mayo spent most of her adult life as a resident of Pinson. She was employed at the pathology lab at Jackson General Hospital, at the Bemis cotton mill, and as a house parent at Youth Town before obtaining her nursing degree from Union University. She worked primarily in home-health and nursing homes. She loved nursing to the point that she was described by many as a work-aholic. No hours of overtime driving the backgrounds of west Tennessee for home health visits were too many for her. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Pinson. Family was of utmost importance to her, and her children and grandchildren were her greatest pride. Her biting wit and her laugh will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her four children, Bobby Mayo, Jr. (Teresa), James Mayo (Liz), Cathy Miles, and David Mayo (Angela); her brother Benny Ballard (Debbie); and her grandchildren Jonathan Moore, Abbey Moore, Brandon Mayo, Evan Mayo, David Mayo, Jr., Ethan Mayo, Briley Mayo, Ella Mayo, Rowan Clayton, and Manuel Perez, along with many other cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Bobby Mayo, Sr.; her father, Fornie Eugene Ballard who was killed in France in 1944; her mother, Syble (Holt) Plaxico; her step-father, Robert. G. Plaxico; her son, Robert Lowrance Mayo; her brother Fornie Larry Ballard; her nephew, Wes Ballard; and her niece, Lora Ballard. Due to the pandemic, the family will not hold visitation or funeral services at this time. A gathering of family and friends is being planned for the spring. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to RIFA. Her grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
